11. What is rose/red gold?

11. It is very simple to produce a gold alloy with a reddish coloration. All that is needed is to increase the proportion of copper in the mixture. To maintain the correct proportion of gold in the alloy, this usually means decreasing the silver content. In the past, many goldsmiths have reduced the silver content and increased the copper content to cut costs, as copper is less expensive than silver. We encounter many people who believe that red gold is old gold, and vice versa; also that old gold is better than new gold. Neither is accurate.

12. What are yellow diamonds?

12. Canary diamonds are also known as Fancy Yellow diamonds. Natural yellow diamonds are fairly rare and thus command a higher price. Only 1 out of 1000 diamonds fit the Canary classification. Chemical impurities create colors in diamonds. A chemically pure diamond will appear colorless. Yellow is created by the presence of nitrogen.

13. What is the difference between white gold and platinum?

13. Gold is normally alloyed with copper, silver, zinc and nickel to add strength to the metal. Platinum normally is not alloyed and at the present is the hardest metal used in the manufacturing of jewelry. Platinum is more expensive than gold.

14. What is an Invisible Setting?

14. The invisible setting technique was developed in France more than two centuries ago. Grooves in each stone's girdle slip into a metal framework below the surface, but the metal cannot be seen, so stones sit side-by-side to create the appearance of a solid surface of gems.
